Descaling is the mechanical removal of rust scale, called tuberculation, from the inside wall of cast iron pipe. A spinning chain on a flexible cable knocks the scale off and flushes it out. The result is a pipe close to its original inside diameter.
Descaling alone helps a drain that clogs often but still has good wall thickness. Thin pipe can be damaged by aggressive descaling, so the crew checks the wall on camera first and lines the pipe after descaling when the wall is thin.
Many Bradenton drains from the 1950s to the 1970s have lost a large share of their inside diameter to scale. Repeat clogs a few weeks after snaking are the usual sign.
